I’m sitting on a comfy sofa in the Emirates Business Class Lounge. I am in Dubai, two thirds the way home to England.

Business class has never made sense to me. Why pay five times the price of a normal ticket for a few luxuries. My economy seat from Melbourne was just fine. But when you have frequent flyer points ready to expire, it makes sense.

So I’ve had my fair share of free food and drink, the luxury of a shower and am ready to enjoy the benefits of a fully flat reclining seat on the plane. But this will be the first and only time.

Here at the Business Class Lounge, there is a ratio of perhaps three members of staff to every passenger. It’s pretty empty at the moment (12pm Dubai time), and there are cleaners, floor polishers, waiting staff and other people walking around aimlessly with little to do. The floor in front of me must have been mopped at least three times since I’ve been here.

I don’t enjoy the 26 hour trip home. Flying is boring, uncomfortable and at times a little frightening. I guess this little experience has helped relax me for the final trip home.

I feel out of place. Everyone is wearing suits wheeling black cases behind them. Some read The Times, others catch up on the latest business news. I’m happy with a puzzle book and the internet.

Anyway, not long until I reach Gatwick.
